The Kaalium are a race of ancient cyborgs from the film Moontrap. They are are the enemies of ancient humans who once lived on the Lunar Surface.

Biology[]

Kaalium are not biological in origin, but technological. They start out as ovular-like modules which is composed of extremely durable material that can't be penetrated without destroying it. The module opens up, with a small head that pops our on a mechanical arm, which is capable of emitting high-pitched sonic noise, powerful enough to shatter glass. Even without a full built body, the module itself can hack into virtually any kind of system, regardless of their security measures. The module also possesses 2 metallic tentacles, which enables it to build a working body out of whatever is lying about near it. This includes anything organic or inorganic in nature. Even the corpse of a 14,000 year old man was used in the construction of a Kaalium that was brought to Earth.

Once a body has been build, the module acts as the head, controlling the body at will. Armaments are shown to be an electrical charge that comes from parts of the body, such as the facial area, however since their bodies vary, it's likely any kind of armament can be used in the construction. As machines, they are exceptionally strong and can take multiple shots to the body without showing any kind of physical distress. As they spent 14 millennia on the moon, building a ship, it's logical these machines can go on for an indeterminate amount of time without any kind of issues. The only real weak spot is the module that makes up their head. if hit with projectile or melee weapons, it's enough to take them down for good.

Origins[]

Not much is known about the Kaalium in terms of origin, but it has been hypothesized that they were possibly tools or weapons that were built by ancient humans 14.000 years prior to the film, which turned on their creators and all but wiped them out. For the next 14,000 years however, what Kaalium remained active, began constructing a cruiser in hopes of conquering the Earth.

Moontrap (1989)[]

Moontrap

14,000 years after, Kaalium spot the Apollo 11 landing module in it's last phase before leaving and for the next 20 years after, the moon remained undisturbed and Kaalium continued in finalizing their vessel. By the 1990s however, a derelict ship is encountered by the space shuttle Camelot, commanded by Col. Jason Grant and Cmdr. Ray Tanner. As they approach the vessel, Grant dons a spacesuit and investigates it, finding a Kaalium module undisturbed and undamaged, as well as the mummified remains of a human. Taking both back with him to Earth, NASA examines both the remains and the device, finding it to be 14,000 years of age. Despite the fact that Mr. Haskell believes this to be a mere ploy to get more money for NASA's budget, he soon realizes this is not the case when the module found, not only has built itself a body, but begins an attack on the base it is in.

Moontrap 3

As apart of his report to the White House, the President makes the decision to send a search and destroy mission to the moon in hopes of possibly thwarting an alien invasion. Once there, Grant and Ray have landed on the moon with George Beck in the command module. They soon find themselves at the site of an ancient base on the moon where they enter and find a woman named Mera in suspended animation. Not only does she travel with Jason and Ray, but also explain to them that the machines they're up against are indeed Kaalium. They take the Lunar Rover back to the lander, only to find that the lander itself is gone. While they were away, a Kaalium took the lander back to the ship as a final necessity for their Earth invasion. The trio arrive, finding the ship, resulting in the death of Ray by a Kaalium patrolling the area, as well as the capture of Jason and Mera. They wake up strapped to operating tables, where Jason realizes that all they are to the Kaalium are spare parts. One of the Kaalium attempts to slice up Mera, however Jason frees himself and stuns the machine long enough to get themselves suited up. The same Kaalium tries again to capture them, only for Jason to shoot it dead.

As all this is going on, the ship is finally on route to Earth, with the space shuttle Intrepid on an intercept course. While the Kaalium ship engages the shuttle, Jason and Mera locate the lander, activating the surprise package within it, which is a self-destruct. Believing this the end for them, a Kaalium module reveals itself, causing Jason to fire at it in zero gravity, resulting in him and Mera flying back away from the site of the imminent explosion. They flee from a massive cavity in the hull before the ship detonates and meets up with the shuttle. After this, Mera and Grant live as a couple, believing it to be all over, however what they don't know is that one Kaalium module made it to Earth and landed in a junkyard. There, the machine seeks new parts to build itself a new body.
