"Oh, you can call me "Great""
―The Great Gonzo

The Great Gonzo, also known as Gonzo, the Great or simply Gonzo, is a short, sapient alien creature belonging to an unnamed species. Raised on planet Earth, Gonzo was completely unaware of his extraterrestrial nature until 1999, when his family, which had long been looking for him, finally managed to contact him. He was offered the chance to return to his homeworld with them, but decided to stay on Earth with his friends.

Described by John Cleese as "the ugly, disgusting little blue creature who catches cannonballs", Gonzo is a short semi-humanoid being. His arms and legs are slender and he has three fingers on his hands. His body is covered in short, blue-colored fur and he has large eyes and a long crooked snout with no nostrils.

Gonzo's body is remarkably resilient: he can be flattened, stretched or hit by a cannonball without suffering any damage. Not only is this so but he actually enjoys such situations, indicating that his species is either immune to physical pain or feels it in a very different way from most other races.

Gonzo is well known for being fun-loving, eccentric and usually optimistic. He considers himself an artiste and never thinks twice before blowing himself out of a cannon or jumping in front of a moving cab to stop it. Although not stupid, Gonzo can be somewhat naïve sometimes. He is very loyal to his friends, who include Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear and Rowlf the Dog, as well as Gonzo's closest friend and roommate: Rizzo the Rat. Gonzo is abnormally fond of chickens and has a chicken girlfriend called Camilla.

Other members of Gonzo's species also take pleasure in being blown out of a cannon, and they consider it an important ceremony.

Gonzo used to work as an itinerant plumber, traveling around in his truck. He first met with Kermit the Frog and Fozzie Bear via an odd road accident, which resulted in his car being upside down over theirs. Kermit and Fozzie then revealed that they were going to Hollywood to start a show and invited Gonzo to come with them, which he accepted, contentedly abandoning his old dream of going to Bombay, India, to become a movie star.

Once arriving in Hollywood, Gonzo became one of the most important performers on The Muppet Show, performing weird, but strangely cultural numbers such as eating a tire to the music of "The Flight of the Bumblebee". He also played the trumpet at the start of every episode. In later years, Gonzo boosted his acting career by playing important roles in some theatrically-released movies: he played a photographer in The Great Muppet Caper, Charles Dickens in The Muppet Christmas Carol, and his lovely self in Muppet Treasure Island.

For a large part of his life, Gonzo didn't know that he was an alien. Other characters usually regarded him as a "Whatever". It is unclear how Gonzo ended up on planet Earth to start with, but his alien relatives have been searching for him for a very long time. In 1999, Gonzo finally received their messages. He was contacted by the Cosmic Fish, who told him about his true origins. When his family arrived, they welcomed Gonzo with a big party and invited him to return to his homeworld with them, which he considered, but then refused, since he wanted to stay on Earth with his friends.
